Another policeman died at the Central Police Hospital at Rajarbagh in Dhaka on Saturday night with coronavirus infection raising the COVID-19 death toll in the force to 41.

The deceased, Mohammad Atiar Rahman, a native of Madhukhali village in Faridpur district, was posted at Manikganj District Police Control Room as a constable.

The police constable breathed his last around 10:00pm, assistant inspector general said Sohel Rana, spokesperson at police headquarters. The body of the deceased was sent to his village home for burial with COVID-19 burial procedure.

With the death of constable Atiar, a total of 41 members of Bangladesh police died from the virus infection while performing duties to protect people from COVID-19 since April 28. He left behind his wife, two daughters and a host of relatives.

The headquarters officials said that at least 212 policemen was tested positive for the novel coronavirus in last 24 hours till Sunday afternoon raising the infection figure to 10,160.

Among the total cases, over 6,000 policemen have made full recovery so far, said sources at the headquarters.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police is the worst hit unit where around 2,300 personnel were infected with over hundred new cases in last 24 hours.

Over 10,000 policemen are in quarantine and over 4,000 are in isolation, said police officials.

Personnel are getting more exposed as they are continuously in close contacts with people while enforcing the lockdown measures which put them in danger of further risk of infection,’ said an official of police headquarters.

The first COVID-19 infection in police was detected on April 8 and police constable Joshim Uddin in DMP was the first cop to die in the virus attack on April 28.
